Everything seems to smell like a wet dog; no, rather the smell of wet muddy fur. Every word that came out of a person’s mouth seems to be a howl, or growl, a monstrous sound that drowns the loudest cry of shrieking witches.

A dark and quiet night. The slow dripping of a tap somewhere accentuated by the fact that he was alone on the street. The boy stumbles quickly through the cobbled ground and thought he saw the shadow of a wolf-like creature. He gulped and forced himself on to his destination…

It was a stormy night, a perfect night for hot chocolate and a good book. A thud on the door got me shaken, the wind was loud and strong but the sound was even louder. A shadow was seen against my kitchen wall , suddenly the silence creep-ed in as I waited

No canons are as loud as a wolf’s howl,
No lightning is as fast as a wolf’s shadow.
The story of the Invasion spreads like wildfire, licking every soul that leaves them bare with fear. Shadows of wolves painted every corner and crevices leaving minions crave for more books.

It came to pass in Malaysia there were lovers of books. And the price of books was dear, and the people wailed for this torment. And lo! There came the howling of the Wolf, with 1.5 million books. Rejoice! For the price is dear no more!

THE END. Or so it would be… A world devoid of tales, without page after gripping page to be turned! If not for a very strange and terrifying – some say enlightening – arrival of a creature on this earth. No, as he would have it, the story is only just beginning.

By the dark alley, a shadow was seen. Who was this mysterious figure; one with a tail so fluffy and teeth so white and shiny? As this figure walked into the light, all heads turned over to catch a glimpse of who it was…

The books were coming.
Words were a commodity; people spoke nonsense and lies so as not to waste the best ones, and books were unheard-of luxuries.
But the books waited patiently, plotting the downfall of ignorance and noise, sharpening their wits, loading their meanings, making their points.
They were ready.

At the beginning there were just books, life was mundane, everything moved slowly but things changed. Whispers were heard, far and wide it spread about a wolf who came to join the game. Ears perked up, instant whispers turns to loud chatter and cheers. The BIG BAD WOLF is here.

It began with a wolf.
It was ended by a wolf.
And somehow, when the survivors paused to take stock and count the missing, they’d realise that there was always the wolf. He was there between the shelves and the shadows, everywhere and nowhere.
It was always the wolf, yes?

The invasion was over and the wolf heaved a huge sigh of relief. Little did humanity know that how close it came to the brink of extinction. What a story the events of the day would have made but who would believe him? He could barely believed it himself.

“No!” she wailed. Within seconds, she lost her chance. She wanted it so badly. She wanted to be there. To be with him. The one she waited, she missed, all year round. How could this be? Will she have the chance? She kept waiting. And trying. And hoping. For him.

The curtains were drawn and no one dared to make a sound. They were not afraid; rather, they were waiting. Outside, the dogs whined, wishing to flee like the neighbours before them. “Here it comes,” she whispered, just before the roaring sounds of looming hovercrafts drowned out all else.

T’was the night before October the seventh,
all was calm as the clock stroke eleven.
A flying saucer descended from the clouds,
its door hissed open aloud,
as Black Paw stood beside the mount.
And out came the books in a humongous load,
Thus changed the way books are sold…

The truth is The Big Bad Wolf wasn’t interested in Little Miss Red. He was really eyeing on Jane Eyre – no not the girl silly, the book – tucked in a basket between cream cakes and sandwiches. That was the last book that he needed to complete his collection of 1,499,999…

It mourns the dusky night,

Malaysians have always identified themselves along ethnic lines. 50 years ago, that all changed.
Some called it an invasion.
Some called it redemption.
Whatever you want to call it, it began to change the very fabric of society. Today, the children of the Enlightened race tell the story. Their journey.

“Sir! Yes, Sir!”
“What is your objective?”
“Shock and Awe, Sir!”
“Define ‘Shock and Awe’!”
Black Paw hesitated a moment.
“Define ‘Shock and Awe’ Lieutenant!!”
And while Liutenant Black Paw repeated the strategy to his master, the preparation was a frenzy amongst the 1.5 million Chosen Ones.
Anticipation – of immortality.

On the cusp of the invasion, the Big Bad Wolf submerged in darkness for his diabolical plot to unfold. Millions of tomes had been strewn across lush green hills to lure his ‘minions’. He had scoured earth for delectable morsels to tempt mere mortals. Would we be able to resist?

As BigBadWolf answered Red’s inane facial features questions, the scent hit. These mischievous games to amuse his non-existent appetite don’t matter anymore; for the most mouth-watering smell seems to emanate from her basket. He would soon find out, fellow readers, that it originates from her book’s price tag…

Red scrutinise her haggard and misshapen Grandma’s face. Instead of voicing her concern, she dutifully decided to comfort her seemingly restless Grandma with a bedtime story; and started reading aloud.
Towards the story’s end, something new stirred deep in BigBadWolf. Thus began his mass invasion quest of the written words…

Transfixed in the bright light beam, BigBadWolf’s ‘Grandma’ disguise was compromised. Red screamed. With the whirring saucer’s noise, he floated within the beam out through the window.
“A talking wolf from outer space! Whatever could he have wanted?” Red mused.
From the closet, hoarder Grandma cried; “My 1.5 million books!”

This is a legend that shall be carried through generations to come. A tale of beast, passion and mountains of priceless texts that no human could imagine. Such enormous phenomenon that left princes shrieking and brought vegetables to life. Some says it happened in an area once populated by tales.

A droning howl roused me from my deep slumber. I felt an itch on my skin… I loped towards my prey, wondering at the change to my vocabulary. Towers of toothsome tomes before me. I was late. The pack stared at me- ‘welcome, comrade’. A mirror. ‘Wolf too? Oh bother.’

It was Baby’s day out with Mummy. They had a wonderful time at the park when the sky suddenly turned dark. Mummy looked around and realized that the park is deserted. Worried, she bundles Baby back into her pram.
Baby [kicking her legs and pointing her pudgy little fingers] – Boo (k) boo (k) ..
Mummy turned and gasped when saw a lone Wolf, holding a cart filled to the brim with books…

Biannually, the Feline Orchid Aficionado Guild (FOAG) organises a 10-day ‘Orchid Mania Extravaganza’ drawing millions of visitors, feline and non-feline alike, who ooooh-ed and aaaah-ed at the latest orchid hybrids created by FOAGers. The success of the Extravaganza made the FOAGers snootier. And wealthier.
Which upset the Wolves most desperately.

There goes another human-boy, tumbling out of the swing in haste to cry wolf, literally. This is the third such address I have received this morning. I am quite perplexed. Last time I checked (and I really did), a handshake was the generic greeting. There was no mention of screaming.

Hey, ho. Berteriak ramai.
Serigala mengongkong — mari-mari. Berdengking kuat nyaring tapi keramat.
Berjuta-juta naskah untuk dicari, ke sini, ke mari, ke sarangku.

They thought invading Earth would be easy. After all, Earthlings don’t read anymore, what with their smartphones and on-demand cat videos. When the books descend from the great ship SerigalaJahat, the puny humans will scatter like sheep. But the Wolf miscalculated the resistance and might of those who *do* read.

The tie from her frilly bonnet tickled my nose when she leaned forward and smiled at me.

High up in the air,
Leaving his minions,
Weeping in servile tone.

Unveiling his lair.
