BookXcess hit another milestone on January 24 with the opening of its first bookstore outside of the Klang Valley! BookXcess’ 8thstore impressively dominates the entire 7th floor and part of the 8th floor of Gurney Paragon Mall, in Penang – covering about 26,000 sq ft.
Known as “the House of a Million Stories”, the store is home to one million books and it boasts two unique bookshelves: the longest (at 70 meters long) and the tallest bookshelf (three stories high) in Malaysia (and Southeast Asia… probably). Besides that, this photogenic BookXcess bookstore is different from the conventional bookstore as it contains a large children’s area that overlooks the sea, lounge areas, many beautiful art installations by our designers, and two Café Wolfs (Café Wolves?).
Of course, it’s not about the size of the bookshelf but how you use it, and BookXcess is using its long shelves to impact deep into the local communities in need, in Penang. BookXcess Gurney Paragon is our first outlet ever to boast a Red Readerhood corner and its current beneficiaries are: House of Hope, The Salvation Army, St. Joseph’s Home, and Hope Worldwide Penang. Our customers have been donating since day one and if little Red Readerhood Penang proves successful, it may be implemented in other BookXcess bookstores as well.
The store was designed by our very own chief innovation officer Chua Yu Jeen, and it has already become the talk of the island with many book lovers young and old taking pictures around the shop and tagging their friends on social media. This 8th store opening marks the first of many planned BookXcess retail store outlets throughout Malaysia as we continue to push and expand our reach farther. Already the team is hard at work in Ipoh to plant the next BookXcess flag.
